All over Europe, cosmopolitan and progressive forces are confronted with rising political movements that claim to speak in the name of 'the people'. These rightwing populist movements pit themselves against mainstream politics and European integration, which they regard as elitist.
The book Populism in Europe, edited by the Green European Foundation, the Grüne Bildungswerkstatt, Heinrich Böll Stiftung und Hellings (and recently translated to German –Rechtspopulismus in Europa) collects articles from some of Europe's leading political thinkers like Daniel Cohn-Bendit and outstanding journalists like Robert Misik. As an exercise in transgressing national political and intellectual borders, the book as such is already a retort to populism.
Rightwing populism poses a serious challenge to re-thinking mainstream and left political concepts and narratives. In 2014, the elections for the European parliament will be influenced by rightwing populism. Ivan Krastev, Permanent Fellow at the IWM and close observer of populism and its impacts on European integration, and Ulrike Lunacek, Member of the European Parliament and sharp critic of Hungarian rightwing populism, will discuss the threat of these new political forces, the shortcomings of current European politics, which facilitate an anti-elitist stance, as well as more inclusive European strategies that valorize diversity and equality.
